Innovating Cybersecurity Training with Gamified VR Experiences

Case Study: Transforming Cybersecurity Training

At Fluent Media, we’re committed to bringing stories to life in the most immersive and engaging way possible. We regularly collaborate with other agencies and production companies. In this collaboration with Simeon Quarrie award-winning storyteller and CEO of VIVIDA, we brought a series of interactive learning experiences to life using Virtual Reality technology.

Gamifying learning helped increase retention of information and ensured audiences were engaged and had an appetite for learning and training to be delivered in a similar way in the future.

CHALLENGE

Making Cybersecurity Training Engaging and Effective

Many people consider cybersecurity training to be boring and unengaging. Our challenge was to make learning fun and engaging, providing a context around the narrative, increasing engagement and retention of information.

Our mandate was to use immersive storytelling to transform the way companies deliver Cybersecurity training. The video above explains how we brought the ‘Dark Web’ to life in VR.

We were asked by clients such as Barclays and Lloyds banks to enable and encourage exploration within these interactive environments.

APPROACH

Gamified, Story-Driven VR Experiences

Matt Castle:

“In 2018, I secured funding from Lloyds bank to bring this project to life. We created a series of virtual learning exercises adapted to the bank’s training and awareness objectives, considering the risks different departments faced, as well as the company as a whole.

Adopting the persona of a ‘secret agent’, employees were required to complete a series of tasks set inside ‘the dark web’ within a set time limit.

By retaining the IP associated with these interactive learning environments, we were able to repurpose aspects of these experiences to suit different organisations’ learning and training objectives.”‍

RESULTS

High Engagement and Lasting Retention of Cybersecurity Knowledge

All experiences were accessible through a browser as well as through VR headsets. Our approach increased engagement and retention of information by up to 70%. Our work was so well received it resulted in securing funding, support & endorsement from both the National Cybersecurity Centre & GCHQ, the UK’s intelligence & Cybersecurity agency.

Further modules were created to help employees understand what to do, and what not to do, in different situations, ie. mitigate cyber breaches when working from home, or in the office.
