Empowering Youth through Storytelling – Fluent Media’s Collaboration with Camden Learning

Camden Learning is a schools-led partnership established in 2017 between Camden schools and Camden Council.

In August 2024, we were asked to produce a series of films documenting the transformative journeys of 16-18 year-old students on work experience placements in the borough, at leading companies based in Kings Cross, such as Google, AstraZeneca, Digital Catapult and British Land.

Building Back Stronger

Camden’s Education Strategy for 2030 focuses on addressing inequalities in the borough. Key objectives include:

  • Ensure every child is known, valued, and thrives
  • Support early learning as the foundation for success
  • Create opportunities for teachers to enjoy teaching and continually improve
  • Build connections to support school and area improvement, innovation, and excellence
  • Celebrate success and welcome challenges

The project highlights how impactful work experience placements can be for young people, both from a personal and career development perspective. A key objective of these films was to capture Camden’s vision for excellence and social equity in education.

Challenge

The challenge was to document these stories in a way that resonated with both businesses and students, highlighting the impact on the broader Camden community.

Camden Learning needed compelling video content that would not only illustrate the immediate benefits but also support their long-term goals of increasing participation and fostering a more diverse talent pipeline for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers.

Approach

With filming and photography taking place throughout the week at multiple locations, we captured several hours of high quality footage.

Final Output: An 8 minute film shown at a launch event hosted by Camden Learning.
1 X 3min edit encouraging businesses in Camden to join the program/support the initiative.
1 X 3min edit aimed at students in the borough.

We also produced 10 + short edits for social media – each under 60 seconds – which can be seen here.

1 X Business-Facing Clip

Focused on why businesses should get involved in work experience week. Interviews with representatives from participating companies included testimony to document the positive impact on the local community.

1 X Student-Facing Clip

Designed to appeal to students and schools. The video features young people discussing how the program improved their soft skills (e.g., teamwork, communication) and expanded their understanding.

Extended Documentary

This longer format film documented the entire journey of students over the five days. It highlights the collaborative efforts between businesses and schools in Camden, emphasising diversity and inclusion in STEAM industries.

Results

Currently being shown to students in secondary schools across Camden,
the 3 films produced by Fluent Media are having a significant impact.

Increased Business Engagement

The business-facing edit is being used by Camden Learning to attract more local companies to participate in future work experience programs. Businesses realised the tangible benefits of hosting students, from gaining fresh ideas to strengthening their ties with the community.

Student Inspiration

The student-facing video sits at the heart of Camden Learnings approach to engaging schools, encouraging students to take part in the program. Feedback showed that students were more enthusiastic about engaging in work experience after seeing how it could positively affect their career aspirations and confidence.

Community Engagement

The extended documentary was well-received by Camden Learning’s stakeholders, showcasing the program’s long-term impact. It emphasised the mutual benefits of collaboration between educators, businesses, and students, while supporting Camden’s goal of building a diverse talent pipeline in STEAM industries.

Amplifying Diversity and Social Equity

Each edit effectively highlighted Camden’s commitment to diversity, ensuring that underrepresented students saw themselves reflected in the success stories, and positioning the work experience program as a key driver of social equity in the borough.
