Creating Pathways for Students in the Creative Media Sector

Fluent Media & the Central London Careers Hub

For many young Londoners, a career in film, TV, or digital media feels equally exciting, and out of reach. Small-to-medium creative businesses often lack the capacity to run traditional work-placement schemes, while parents and teachers struggle to keep up with a fast-moving industry.

At Fluent Media we exist to close that gap through the power of storytelling. Our award-winning filmmakers and narrative strategists already capture first-hand accounts of students on placements with global organisations such as Google, AstraZeneca and British Land, in collaboration with in Camden STEAM, turning those journeys into short films that spark the imagination of the next cohort of talent.

Enter the Central London Careers Hub

The Central London Careers Hub (CLCH) is one of four London Careers Hubs funded by the Greater London Authority and The Careers & Enterprise Company; delivered by Reed in Partnership. Its purpose is simple: bring educators and employers together so that every young person can see clearly and practically where their studies could take them.

With more than 200 secondary schools and colleges in its network, CLCH acts as a centre of excellence for careers education, championing best practice and amplifying employer voices.

The Creative, Media & Cultural Industry Advisory Group

To make sure guidance is grounded in real-world need, CLCH convenes sector-specific Industry Advisory Groups (IAGs). Fluent Media was invited to join the newly formed Creative, Media & Cultural IAG at its inaugural meeting on 5 March 2025.

Key themes from that first session mirror our own day-to-day experience:

ChallengeIAG InsightHow Fluent Media Responds
Parent & carer perception1 in 5 Year 11 pupils say they haven’t heard any working-world stories beyond immediate family. Our documentary shorts feature parents, mentors and employers speaking candidly about routes in.
Teacher awareness & timetable pressureCreative subjects often lose out to EBacc targets. We package filmed case studies as bite-size classroom assets that fit into any subject period.
SME capacity for work experienceMost creative employers are micro-businesses.We promote the Equalex multi-employer carousel model, making one-week placements achievable for small teams.

Fluent Media will continue to contribute practical collateral—video, podcast and social snippets—that help teachers, parents and employers speak the same language about “essential skills”, apprenticeships and growth opportunities.

Why This Partnership Matters

  • Reach. CLCH connects us with careers leaders in every Central London borough, scaling the impact of our content.
  • Credibility. Being part of an IAG ensures our materials are aligned with national benchmarks and the new Growth & Skills Levy landscape.
  • Equity. Together we’re dismantling misconceptions that creative careers are only for the “lucky few” by showing real-life, local pathways.
